Master Electrician Exam Prep: Calculations, Code & Strategy
The master electrician exam isn't a harder journeyman test โ it's a different test. More design, more calculations, more judgment. Here's how to train for it.
How the Master Exam Differs from Journeyman
The journeyman exam asks whether you can install to code. The master exam asks whether you can design to code: service sizing per NEC Article 230, feeder and dwelling load calculations per Article 220 (standard and optional methods), transformer and motor circuit design per Articles 450 and 430, and fault-current awareness. Expect a higher share of multi-step calculation questions and, in many states, business and law questions on top.
The Calculations You Must Own
| Calculation | NEC reference |
|---|---|
| Dwelling load โ standard & optional method | NEC 220 Parts III & IV |
| Range & appliance demand factors | NEC Table 220.55 |
| Motor branch circuit, OCPD & feeder sizing | NEC 430.22, 430.52, 430.62 |
| Conductor ampacity with derating | NEC 310.15, Table 310.16 |
| Transformer primary/secondary protection | NEC 450.3 |
| Grounding electrode & EGC sizing | NEC 250.66, Table 250.122 |
Each of these follows a repeatable procedure. The exam punishes anyone who has read the procedure but never run it under time pressure.
Training the Master Exam in the App
- Set level to Master โ the AI raises question difficulty and weights calculations and design articles.
- Drill one calculation type per day โ generate "NEC 220 optional method dwelling calculation" questions until the procedure is automatic, then move to motors, then transformers.
- Ask the AI Study Coach to walk through solutions โ when you miss a multi-step calc, the coach breaks it into steps with the code citation at each step.
- Simulate exam day โ timed mock exams at full length, then review wrong answers only until the weak-topic list is empty.
Strategy Notes
Bank the lookup questions fast to buy time for calculations. Flag any calc that takes over four minutes and return to it. And know your state's format โ several states add a separate business/law module that the technical prep won't cover.
