How it works & the NEC rules behind it

Under NEC §250.50, all grounding electrodes present at each building or structure must be bonded together to form the Grounding Electrode System (GES).

Recognized Grounding Electrodes (NEC §250.52):

  • 1. Concrete-Encased Electrode / "Ufer Ground" (§250.52(A)(3)): Consists of at least 20 feet (6.0 m) of bare #4 AWG copper wire or 1/2" steel rebar encased in at least 2 inches of concrete located within the foundation footing. Most effective residential electrode. GEC to Ufer is never required to exceed #4 AWG Copper (§250.66(B)).
  • 2. Ground Rods & Pipes (§250.52(A)(5)): Must be at least 8 feet long and 5/8" in diameter (or 1/2" listed). Under §250.53(A)(2), if a single rod does not have a verified resistance of 25 ohms or less, it must be supplemented with a second rod spaced at least 6 feet apart. GEC to rod is never required to exceed #6 AWG Copper (§250.66(A)).
  • 3. Metal Underground Water Pipe (§250.52(A)(1)): In direct contact with earth for 10 ft or more. Must be supplemented by an additional electrode (§250.53(D)(2)). The GEC must connect within 5 feet of the point of entrance (§250.68(C)(1)).
  • 4. Ground Ring (§250.52(A)(4)): Encircles the building, minimum 20 ft of #2 AWG bare copper buried at least 30 inches deep. GEC never required to exceed #2 AWG Copper (§250.66(C)).

Worked example, step by step

Example: Sizing GES for a New 200A Residential Home with Foundation Ufer

Setup: 200A Service (#2/0 Cu Service Conductors), foundation has 20 ft rebar Ufer ground, no metal underground water pipe available.

  • 1. Required Electrode: The concrete-encased foundation rebar (§250.52(A)(3)) is present and MUST be used per §250.50.
  • 2. GEC Sizing from Table 250.66: For #2/0 Cu service conductors, Table 250.66 normally specifies #4 AWG Copper.
  • 3. Ufer Special Exemption (§250.66(B)): The GEC connecting solely to the concrete-encased electrode is not required to exceed #4 AWG Copper.
  • 4. Supplemental Rod: Because a concrete-encased Ufer ground is utilized, supplementary ground rods are NOT required by code!

Frequently asked questions

YES. Under NEC §250.53(A)(2), a single ground rod electrode that does not have a certified soil resistance test proving 25 ohms or less MUST be supplemented by an additional electrode. In practice, electricians almost universally drive two ground rods spaced at least 6 feet apart to bypass expensive soil resistance testing.

Under NEC §250.68(C)(1), interior metal water piping can ONLY be used as a grounding conductor within the first 5 feet (1.52 m) from where the pipe enters the building. Beyond 5 feet, interior plumbing cannot serve as a grounding bus.

The grounding electrode conductor typically lands on a grounding bus inside the meter base or the first disconnecting means, bonding it to the grounding electrode system (ground rods, Ufer, or ring). All electrodes present at a structure — rod, concrete-encased, and metal water pipe — must be bonded together into one system per NEC §250.50.
