Everything You Need to Pass the NEC Journeyman Exam

The journeyman exam is open book and timed. Knowing the answer is not enough — you have to find the rule fast. Every mode in the app trains one half of that problem.

🎯

Readiness Score

One number for how close you are to passing, built from your accuracy per outline area, your recent trend and how much of the blueprint you have actually covered.

⏱️

Full Mock Exams

Real question count, real clock, real pass mark — weighted to the exam outline rather than to whatever the bank happens to hold.

📖

NEC Citation on Every Answer

1,868 questions name the article the answer lives in. You learn the book, not just the letter — which is the skill an open-book exam is actually testing.

🧮

Calc Drills

Nine calculation types isolated one at a time — dwelling load, ohm's law, motors, ampacity, conduit fill, box fill, voltage drop, transformers, grounding.

🗂️

Custom Drills

Build your own set from any article, outline area or difficulty. Weak on Article 250? Drill nothing but grounding and bonding until it's automatic.

📐

Table Match

Timed matching against the NEC tables you'll be flipping to on exam day — conductors, ampacities, fill. Speed on the tables is free marks.

🔍

Code Reading

Questions drawn from real code language, not paraphrase. Exceptions, "shall" versus "shall be permitted", and the conditions that quietly change the answer.

⚔️

1v1 & Group Battles

Head-to-head timed NEC questions against other candidates, plus the Weekly Code Cup leaderboard that resets every week.

📈

Progress Analytics

Accuracy by outline area and by article, streaks, and a weak-topic list that updates as you practice — so study time goes where it pays.

🔬 What's actually in the bank

A Question Bank You Can Audit

Most exam prep apps tell you the bank is "comprehensive." Here are the real counts, straight from the content database.

2,720Practice questions100% written to NEC 2023
1,868With an NEC citationacross 925 distinct articles
1,425Review-passed questionsmapped to the exam outline
9Calculation typesdrilled in isolation

One NEC edition, deliberately. A question that is correct under the 2023 code can be wrong under 2020 or 2026, so the bank does not mix cycles — and the app tells you which edition your state has actually adopted.

Weighted to the Exam Outline, Not to the Bank

🗺️ Know your jurisdiction

Your State Might Not Be on the 2023 Code

NEC adoption is not national. The app tracks the edition, testing vendor and licence class for every US jurisdiction, so you know what you're actually being tested on.

51Jurisdictions tracked50 states + DC
34Issue a journeyman licencethe rest license differently
24On the 2023 NEC18 on 2020, 7 on 2017
2026First state already aheadColorado, effective Aug 2026

Adoption data is read from state licensing bodies and dated in-app. Some states adopt locally rather than statewide, and a few — California among them — test a state-amended code derived from the NEC rather than the NEC itself. The app flags these rather than pretending the national bank covers them. Always confirm with your licensing board before you book.

🔁 How it works

From Download to Exam-Ready in Three Steps

1

Set your exam and date

Pick your track — journeyman, master or apprentice — and your state. The app weights your practice to that exam's outline and counts down to your date.

2

Drill where you're weak

Custom drills, calc drills, table match and code reading. Every explanation names the NEC article, so you're learning where rules live while you practice.

3

Prove it under exam conditions

Run a full-length timed mock exam. When the Readiness Score holds above your pass mark across every outline area, you book with evidence rather than hope.

🎛️ Practice modes

Seven Ways to Practice, One Bank

Different modes train different failure points. The bank behind them is the same 2023 NEC content.

⏱️

Mock Exam

Full length, timed, weighted to your state's outline, scored against the real pass mark.

🗂️

Custom Drill

Any article, area or difficulty — you choose the set, the app builds it.

🧮

Calc Drills

One calculation type at a time until the arithmetic stops costing you minutes.

📐

Table Match

Timed matching against NEC tables — conductors, ampacities, fill.

🔍

Code Reading

Real code language, exceptions and conditions — not paraphrase.

📅

Daily Code Challenge

One fresh question every day, free for everyone, to keep the streak alive.

⚔️

Battles & Weekly Code Cup

1v1 and group, plus a leaderboard that resets weekly.

⭐ Ratings

Newly Launched — Be an Early Reviewer

We'd rather show you the bank than borrowed praise

VoltageLab NEC Exam Prep shipped recently and hasn't collected enough store ratings to show an average yet. Rather than fill this space with testimonials you can't verify, we've put the actual question-bank numbers above — count them against any other NEC prep app you're considering.

If the app helps you pass, a rating genuinely moves the needle for a small independent build:

❓ FAQ

NEC Journeyman Exam Prep — Common Questions

What NEC edition does the app test?
Every question in the bank is written to the 2023 National Electrical Code — all 2,720 of them. The app doesn't mix editions, because a question that's right in one cycle can be wrong in the next. It also tracks which NEC edition your state has actually adopted, so you can see when your jurisdiction sits behind or ahead of the 2023 code.
How many practice questions are in the app?
2,720 questions. 1,868 carry a direct NEC article citation, covering 925 distinct articles, and 1,425 have been through review and are mapped to the ten exam outline areas that state journeyman exams are built from.
Does the app simulate a real journeyman electrician exam?
Yes. Mock Exam mode runs a full-length, timed, open-book paper weighted to the exam outline rather than to the bank — so Wiring Methods carries the weight your state gives it, not the weight it happens to have in the question pool. You're scored against the real pass mark at the end.
What is the Readiness Score?
A single number estimating how close you are to passing, built from your accuracy per outline area, your recent trend, and how much of the blueprint you've actually covered. It moves as you practice and names the areas dragging it down — so you study the weak article instead of the comfortable one.
Is the app free?
Free to download on iOS and Android, including a free question set and the Daily Code Challenge. Pro unlocks the full 2,700-question bank, full-length mock exams and every practice mode, as a monthly or annual subscription. Current pricing is shown on the store listing.
Which states does it cover?
NEC adoption, testing vendor and licence class are tracked for all 50 states plus DC — 34 of which issue a journeyman electrician licence. Texas ships with a full exam blueprint weighted to the official TDLR/PSI Candidate Information Bulletin, and further state blueprints are being added.
Does every answer show the code reference?
Every explanation that maps to a specific rule names the article inline — 1,868 questions carry one. That's the point: you learn where the answer lives in the book, not just which letter was right. The real exam is open book, and finding the rule fast is the skill being tested.
What calculation types can I drill?
Nine — dwelling load calculations, ohm's law, motor calculations, conductor ampacity, conduit fill, box fill, voltage drop, transformer calculations, and grounding and bonding sizing. Calc Drills isolate one type at a time so you build speed on the arithmetic that eats exam minutes.
Can I compete against other electricians?
Yes — 1v1 and group battles on timed NEC questions, plus the Weekly Code Cup leaderboard that resets every week. Both draw from the full question bank regardless of subscription, so free users see pro-tier questions during contests.
Is this app affiliated with the NFPA?
No. VoltageLab is an independent study tool. NEC® and NFPA 70® are registered trademarks of the National Fire Protection Association, which does not endorse this app. The app is a practice aid — it is not a substitute for the code book, and you should verify anything exam-critical against the edition your jurisdiction has adopted.
