Discussion On Electric Motor Symbol

525

Once a motor is fetched in the power industry. So, it is to be connected with the terminal box. The Junior engineer is asked to choose a suitable cable for this. Before choosing a suitable cable for this motor the engineer should know whether it is a single-phase or three-phase motor. In this case, the electric motor symbol helps him to take the decision.

From the above instance, you can easily assume the significance of the electric motor symbol. Today I will discuss all electric motor symbols. If you know the all symbols then it will be very easy for you to work.

Coil/winding

The following electric motor symbol represents the coil of a motor. We all know that a high electromagnetic field is produced in the coil through excitation system.

There are two types of winding in the electric motor.

  • Series Winding
  • Shunt Winding

Series Winding

The coil which is connected series with armature field is called series winding.

Shunt Winding

The coil which is connected in parallel with the armature field is called shunt winding.

Carbon Brush

If you want to cross a river then what will you do? You have to use a bridge or boat. A carbon brush is like a bridge in an electric motor. It helps to pass the electric current from the static part (stator) to the rotating part (rotor) of the motor.

A normal symbol of motor

Suppose, you will draw a motor controlling system using any kind of schematic software. Then you may see this type of normal electric motor symbol in that software.

Dual Speed Motor

A motor can run with dual speed. Now, you may tell that, how it will be possible? It’s not rocket science. Actually, two separate windings are provided here in the core of the motor body. Magnetic flux from dual windings can produce the dual type of torque. As a result, the motor can be operated with two types of speed or RPM (Revolutions Per Minute)

AC motor

If may see the following type of electric motor symbol on the motor plate. Actually, it’s a symbol of an AC motor. AC motor converts AC current to mechanical energy.

DC motor

The following electric motor symbol is assigned for the DC motor symbol. DC motor runs by DC current and provides mechanical force like a horse. In the commutation process, AC supply is converted to DC supply in this case.

Linear Motor

Have you ever heard about the linear motor? We all think the motor can provide a rolling torque in a clockwise direction. But it can supply linear torque also. In a linear motor, the acting force is applied horizontally. The following electric motor symbol represents linear motor.

Stepper motor

The following electric motor symbol is assigned for the stepper motor. A Stepper motor is a special type of motor. Its function can easily be realized by its name. It rotates by maintaining steps. It is used in the robotics field with a view to the automatic movement of robotic equipment in a particular direction or at different angles. This type of motor doesn’t contain a carbon brush. In college and university robotic projects stepper motor is a crying need.

Permanent Magnet DC motor

A permanent magnet is used in a brushless motor. In a brushless motor permanent magnet is used in lieu of armature winding.

AC single-phase series motor

This symbol is used for AC single-phase motor. Single-phase motor requires a phase and a neutral line. Its operating voltage is 120-250 volt. Here a series coil is connected with the armature field.

3-Phase series motor

A 3-phase motor requires a three-phase line. It’s connected in star-delta connection. Its operating voltage is 208-440 volt. Here a coil is connected in series with the armature field.

DC shunt excitation Motor

In this motor rotor field coil is excited with DC voltage. There is a coil that is connected in parallel with the armature coil. The following symbol indicates the DC shunt excitation motor.

Single Phase Repulsion Motor

The repulsion of the electromagnetic field is used in this motor for rotating purpose. Single-phase repulsion motor symbol is given below. it can rotate the brush along with it.

Single-phase synchronous motor

In a single-phase synchronous motor, a synchronous motion is maintained between the rotor and stator magnetic field. In E-drawing this type of motor is assigned by the following symbol:

AC Motor With Cooling Fan

In an AC motor a cooling fan may attach to prevent over-heating condition. Otherwise, motor winding insulation can be damaged and cause short circuit fault.

DC compound excitation motor

This type of motor holds both series and shunt winding. Its speed regulation is good.

3-phase wound motor

This electric motor symbol represents the 3 phase wound motor. Can you build up a motor that can produce high torque using low current. Yes, it’s three-phase wound motor. In a three-phase wound motor, there is an external resistance connected via slip ring.
